I have read hundreds of books, never enjoyed reading the whitespaces between the lines! Don’t know why people recommend it all the time.

Looks old, perhaps “beaten to a pulp”. Regarding the missing page: “that tears it”. At “the end of the line” is a “dark period”. I believe they “started a new chapter” when they turned the page.
