We didn’t grow enough on our 1/3 of an acre suburban plot (that included the house and lots of trees) to avoid the grocery stores, but my mom did manage to have a small garden, apple trees, a peach tree, a pear tree, a fig tree, blueberry bushes, cherry bushes, red, black and gold raspberries. We kids and then our kids loved to help her harvest her stuff (not a lot of it made into the house). There is nothing like a fully ripened peach or tomato picked right of the vine/tree and still warm from the sun. Not even a farmers market can give you that. We learned a lot about how to plant, grow, nurture and harvest stuff. At various times in the garden she grew corn, tomatoes (beefsteak and cherry), cucumbers, zucchini, yellow squash, pumpkins, watermelon, green beans, bell peppers, carrots, potatoes, lettuce, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and more I am sure, but just can’t remember. When most of us were grown and gone, she planted flowers. She sure taught us a lot.

Now Dad needs to explain about growing your own for a lot less than buying it in stores.

My X counted it a defeat if she had to buy vegetables in the store before they were ready in the garden.
