- Put back or add resources to deal with things that police are ill-equipped to handle, from mental health to nonviolent civil disturbances.
- DRAMATICALLY change the way we hire and train police nationwide. They are using poor hiring criteria (which has enabled police CONVICTED of police brutality to simply move to a new town and get a new police job), then they are trained for a few months. In other countries, many have the equivalent of a college degree or more. Here, they are taught that they are warriors against a constant and surrounding enemy against whom bullets are the only defense. This merely encourages shooting.
- Change how policing is done. Properly speaking, change it BACK to “community policing,” which has been used with considerable success in a number of places. This includes “walking the beat” so they get to know people and are seen as part of the community instead of just cruising through in closed police cars “looking for trouble.”
- ELIMINATE the military equipment the police have bought. It encourages thinking of themselves as an army battling the citizens they are supposed to protect, and it gives them an untoward advantage.
- Require dashboard AND body cameras, and ruthlessly punish anyone who violates it – any crime committed (e.g., violence or death) should have them considered an accessory.
Long overdue! And now I’m seeing that cops in other cities want to quit simply because they can’t abuse and put choke holds on Black people! I say GOOD!! Let their butts resign and sacrifice their paychecks and their pensions! But I think it will soon start to settle in the fact and question of how will they support their families. Then some of them may ask to return.
