Clarence Darrow was reputed to run a stiff wire through his cigar, then light it just as opposing counsel began his summation. The jury would watch the ash grow longer and longer, wondering when it would fall from the cigar…and not listen to anything the other lawyer was saying. Maybe THAT’S what Lars is trying to do.
