No need to go to camp in the 1950s in country Sacramento, CA. We rode our bikes every day, played jacks, jumped rope, walked to the park for arts & crafts, swung in the backyard hammock, went to Summer Bible School; went on rode trips in the station wagon up to Pollock Pines & Placerville, and down to the Bay Area, Yosemite, Marine World in So. CA; walked to the CA State Fair that was only blocks from our house. As I got older, I started attending Girl Scout camping trips in Northern CA: what FUN!
