A group of us once clapped at a take off. We had just spent a week-in-hell at a resort that had lost all it electric power for the time.

Ah, see, I have now lost all respect for Wulff and Morgenthaler. You should clap after a plane landing whenever it feels good to do so.

    I always clap after a landing. I’m a pilot.

The clapping is mostly an expression of relief at arriving safely.

My wife is a pilot. I have never flown with her. From what she has told me, I can see her clapping after a successful takeoff. Gravity never sleeps; takeoffs are not guaranteed, but landing is unavoidable.

Wow, I cannot understand why so many people are against clapping when a plane lands. Do these people not realize the miracle that just occurred there? Sure, it has become an “everyday miracle,” but IMO a miracle nonetheless. I’m in my late 50’s, and I remember back in the day when it was a regular thing that the passengers clapped on landing safely. Then, somehow or other, all the so-called “frequent flyers” became too cool to clap, I suppose. In case those too-cool frequent flyers and others don’t get it, the purpose of the clapping is two-fold: first, it’s a sign of communal relief at having made the journey while still in one piece, and two, it is a show of respect to the captain, the co-pilot, and the crew for having made a successful flight. Yes, sure, it’s their job to do that, you might say, but I think that it is a very special job that they do. It is definitely a shame that so few people clap upon landing anymore, and that is is now looked down on, in general, as somehow declasse. Although I think that this particular comic strip is usually hilarious and right on the mark, I feel that today’s panel was way off the mark.

I don’t applaud when my bus driver makes it to my destination, even on a white-knuckle let’s-see-if-we-can-tip-this-thing ride when he/she’s behind schedule.
