As a child of mine once explained, the food goes to stomach, but sweets go into back.

There’s a genuine phenomenon called “dessert stomach”. As I understand it, the stomach is somewhat flexible as to size. How full you feel is down to the pressure in there, but that’s a combination of how much you’ve eaten and how much the stomach has actually relaxed. Just because you feel “full”, that doesn’t mean it actually can’t hold more – just that your body has decided it’s had enough of whatever you were eating. Take a bite of dessert, and the sugars trigger a relaxation of the walls of the upper stomach – easing the pressure and giving you room for more.

In other words, even when you’re full, there’s usually room for dessert.

It doesn’t take much of Andy’s lima bean/tofu casserole to feel full.

I was over a friend’s place once. We had some pizza and salad from a local place. I was comfortably full. Then his wife says, “I made cake too. You want cake don’t you?” So, yeah cake. She brings out these big slabs of sheet cake. “It’s single layer, so it’s not as much as it looks like!” Oh, yes it is.

I remember when I was about 5 years old, my grandfather told me that in China, the kids eat dessert first (before the main meal). I don’t know where that idea came from (aside from him teasing me), but I suspect my own thinking was that on the other side of the world, everything must be done the opposite from the way we did it. I do remember that my reaction was “Wow, those lucky kids in China!”.
