Wally: Andy? How are things at school? How are your friends? Any girlfriends we should know about?
Andy: Fine. Fine. Nope.
Wally: And you said I couldn't get three words out of him.
Joan: Technically, that was TWO. He said "fine" twice.
This remindes me of the story of Calvin Coolidge.
Known as silent Cal because he talked very little.
A Washington socialite made a bet with her husdand that she could make Cal say more then two words.
When she went to the President and told him of her bet, silent Cal said “you loose”.
Sorry to tell you, though I have an except on this when we ate out our son would tell us about everything in class his poor sister didn’t get to say much so I would take time to talk with her for problems her dad wasn’t much help there, as teens get older in HS years they still don’t say much or next thing parent’s get notice something is wrong.
Yet another Calvin Coolidge story - As he was leaving from church sevices one Sunday morning someone asked him what the sermon was about. “Sin” replied Coolidge. When pressed to expand on what the preacher said about the topic, Coolidge replied “He was against it”.

My brother is 13, and he won’t stop going with his friends, but with family, he’s shut tight.

With teenagers, those short answers are just to get adults off their back. I wouldn’t believe him, but he still seems fine.

Try giving a teenager chores. You’ll get all SORTS of interesting words out of them that way.

Just an observation.
When we’re parents of teens, we’re told they don’t talk to us because it’s a phase.
Than something like Columbine happens, and people are hollering because the parents didn’t know.
