Every time one of these viruses appears, funding into research starts up, which then fades as the current epidemic fades. Time after time after time. Maybe it would make sense to fund development of a protocol for coronavirus that is usable for various versions? We have something roughly similar with flu vaccines, production of which, I would point out, is geared up about 9 months before the next expected epidemic. Sometimes the vaccine match isn’t perfect for the dominant strain in a given year, but it’s always better than none at all.
