Taiwan is a functioning democracy that clearly does not want to be ruled by the mainland at this time. Letting China coerce Taiwan into ‘unification’ puts every nation in the region on notice that they need to bow to Beijing’s will.
For the US, it means loss of export markets & irreparable harm to our trustworthiness as a partner. We don’t need to go to war with China, simply make it clear that we won’t stand by if they use force.
