A cop once threatened to ticket me for running a red light. Yes, I was out RUNNING. At 5 in the morning. And didn’t wait for a green light before I went through the intersection.

Story from a friend, years ago:

Out walking on an empty Sunday, crossed in the middle of the block. That’s jaywalking, which at least in those days was considered a serious offense in Southern California. So serious that one not only had to pay a fine, but also sit through a long “safety” movie about the dangers of jaywalking.

On the other hand, speeders, while they had to appear in court, did not have to sit through a movie, and there was no fine if they were travelling less than 5 mph over the limit.

So the cop who caught him wrote him a speeding ticket: “Approximate speed, 3 mph. Legal speed, 0 mph.” When the lawbreaker appeared in court, everyone — including the judge — had a good laugh, and then the fellow was free to go.
