I am not so sure the Iranians will directly target US officials. It would be very unwise of the Iranians to do so. Such action would trigger a very serious response. The US would escalate very rapidly and raise the stakes far beyond anything the Iranians are capable of.
Remember that Soleimani was hit on foreign soil in a nation Iran is essentially prosecuting a war against. He was an open target, a designated terrorist operating outside Iranian borders.
If Iran hits any American official who is operating within normal boundaries, like an Ambassador in his assigned nation, we can and will treat that as equivalent to an attack on our sovereign soil. It will open the door to US decapitation operations on Iranian soil, a method we have not used so far.
The distinction may seem rather obtuse but in the realm of world “diplomacy” it has substantial meaning. Much of the world is wringing their collective hands right now but won’t get overly exercised. If Iran pushes the boundary they will effectively isolate themselves from any western support at all.
