I learned to drive in Oregon, in the fall, in the rain. I learned to drive at night on twisty, dark country roads where the rain was so heavy it obscured the lines in the road and the lights of oncoming traffic made the road disappear altogether, and I was in constant terror of going off the road into the ditch (all western Oregon roads have ditches on either side). For 8 years I drove in Oregon rain until I had no problem with it. Then I moved back down to California (where I’d grown up, but never driven). I remember once driving on the I-10 towards Pacific Coast Highway (a stretch of freeway scary in its own right, especially to someone used to Oregon country roads) when a heavy squall hit … and once again I was in terror as car after car passed me going 80+ mph (I had sensibly slowed down when my windshield wipers couldn’t keep up with the rain). I could only pray that they would manage to keep control of their speeding cars and not hydroplane into me! Californians do not know how to drive in the rain!
