Margaret Hoover, great-grand daughter of Herbert Hoover, now hosts a reboot of “Firing Line” on PBS. And David Eisenhower now hosts some political panel show. What does it mean? Who’s next from what political family? Chelsea Clinton? One of the Bush daughters? Please, please don’t say one of the Trump siblings … unless it’s a new “Tales From the Dark Side.”
In Hoover’s favor, somewhat anyhow, the elaborate federal agencies that now exist (or did before the current administration’s taste for “alternative facts”) gathering reams of data on all sorts of economic dynamics hadn’t been set up yet. Hoover, and indeed Roosevelt, were basically flying blind, didn’t know how bad things were, how rapidly things were changing, or even where the real problems were.
I’m not sure it’s literally true that the New Deal was a Hoover ripoff. In any case, what is indisputable is that Roosevelt turned off the spigots of the New Deal prematurely (he’d campaigned on a “balanced budget” platform, after all), with results that were disastrous and in some ways the great Keynesian experiment known as World War II was the saving of him (and of the US economy).
I like President Cal in the background. Silent. Despite allowing capitalism to run amok, I read that he often sat outside some Sunday afternoons with a friend who knew business. Together, they would go down a list of federal expenditures, decide to terminate useless or outdated programs, and even single purchases that were circumspect. One time, they found that the Postal service was buying their bags from a certain supplier. His friend knew the supplier, and thought the mail-carrier bags cost too much. He knew of another supplier who sold the same types much cheaper. Monday morning, the switch was made. (I cannot imagine George W and Dick Cheney doing that!)
Ah, the Chief Executive and America’s greatest sport! Interesting book to check out: The Presidents and the Pastime by Curt Smith. It covers from Taft to Trump and more. A bit thick, but enjoyable. Now back to Game Six!
The money doesn’t disappear. It ends up in the pocket of the guy that got the bet right. There is nothing regulating the market as a market. It is a giant betting parlor.

Makes you sad, doesn’t it? That we keep making the same mistakes over and over?
