For a long time, we thought Daisy, our terrier, was a literal watch dog — until the day a utility contractor decided to save time and vaulted over our back fence. He was stopped in his tracks only momentarily but long enough for me to broadcast to anyone in hearing distance that his intelligence was exceeded only by his stupidity!
I once had a live-and-learn moment when I snuck up on our senior black lab asleep in the sun and poked him with a stick. He instantly levitated a foot or two, rotated 180 degrees, showed teeth, growled, smiled and wagged his tail before landing. Well I was a teen, working in the family business, had to clean up after him, and ordered by dad to “…pick the new gravel out of the dog’s poop.” What goes around came around when I had teens of my own.

If he’s taking a break from watching, he certainly does!
