Ok, I dislike and disagree with the message of the cartoon. But, I have to admit I chuckled at the way the message was delivered.

It will be a good early lesson for the athletes, just like the real world where 10% of the fishermen catch 90% of the fish or 10% of the salmon get 90% of the orders, 10% of the college athletes will get 90% of the royalties.

California’s college sports pay law acknowledges the truth – in at least some of college sports “students athletes” are no more “students” than the Kardashians are nuclear physicists. The players instead know that college teams essentially have become audition stages and minor league teams for the pros. Sports casters will be able to spare us the pablum about how Joe Blockhead “is a 4.0 student studying pre-law…” ; no he isn’t, he can barely articulate a full sentence while he waits to be drafted to the Bruisers.

California actually got a big one correct. It’s about time. Hopefully the rest of the states will follow suit soon, just wish they hadn’t delayed the start to 2023, should of given the NCAA only one year to get behind it.

As per usual, Bok gets it wrong. The CA law allows athletes to retain some of the value of their image and name, not get paid for playing.

This time, I agree/disagree whole heartedly: On the one hand, I wish that a mere game could be played for the pleasure involved in playing, and that spectators were there to enjoy rather than fanaticize. On the other hand, being something like a realist, I recognize that my dream cannot happen (now, with TV etc.) and that college athletes, who put their lives and athletic careers just as much at risk as professional athletes, are damaged by the current NCAA rules which just cannot work to restore the dream… and which spawn constant efforts to sneak around them somehow. Being more real about the monetary value of college athletes seems like a step that’s simultaneously away from my ideal and toward a fairer outcome.

Companies make a huge profit from endorsements from college athletes. Put some of this in a trust fund for athletes that graduate.

Will the football players now get bonuses for concussions delivered and for concussions suffered? Will that stop when the athletes are no longer able to count their money or talk coherently?

There is so much that is wrong with the current college athletics and NCAA. Paying athletes or letting them selling their images is NOT the solution. STUDENT athletes need to be students first, they shouldn’t be getting automatic passes in easy classes (they don’t even need to attend). Athletes should not be mandated to wear specific brands and they should not be prevented from using tape that covers the logo. The football coach should not be the highest paid at the college.

Then let’s talk about the lack of support for women’s teams and the lack of protective equipment (and clothing) for cheerleaders.

The NCAA should declare all California colleges and universities that pay their football players to be ineligible for bowl games and championships. Treat them like any school that violates NCAA rules and put them on probation and strip scholarships.
