Sometimes limited effects were good for forcing filmmakers to get creative. The shark in “Jaws” looked cruddy, so we got a whole lot of not seeing the shark. To this day, no shark movie comes close to the popularity of “Jaws.”
It made more sense to complain about CGI in its early days. The aliens in “Return of the Jedi” looked more convincing than the ones in “Men in Black.”
