I read that there are 50 – 50 – endangered species that live in the Amazon rain forest. And that doesn’t count the indigenous people, many of whom have not had any contact with the outside world.
At the end of the John Brunner novel “The Sheep Look Up” takes place in Ireland where we find out that smell of smoke is from the USA burning. (In this world there is no EPA or UN operation to limit pollution. A Libertarian business Valhalla. An it isn’t pleasant.)
After Norway and Germany had stopped their forest development aid for Brazil recently because of his policy towards the rain forest, Bolsonaro asked which right the Europeans had to meddle into Brazil’s affairs and called them colonialist. This seems illogical for me, and not only because Norway and Germany never had colonies in South America. I’d rather ask him about his right to destroy the forest where indigenous people have been living for millennia and then remind him, that he and most modern Brazilians are the descendants of the colonialists that took over the territory of other people during the last 500 years. And also remind him, that Norway and Germany don’t need his permit to decide where they would donate their money.

This reminds me of the comments about the 1980 Mt. St. Helen’s eruption, “Don’t visit Washington State; Washington State is coming to visit you.”
I was downwind of the eruption years later and ankle-deep in ash. The soil was very fertile. At least with a volcanic eruption, there is a plus side.
