Pencil cases? I’ll admit, I went to school a long time ago, but I don’t remember pencil cases. Lots of spiral notebooks and three ring binders that could not make the trip to the next grade though. Same reasons.
Lynn’s Comments: The whole time the “EP and TM” motif ran in the strip, my daughter was asked if it was true; if she really had a crush on someone with the initials TM and wrote it on her pencil case. Usually, her friends were able to get past the hype and see that FBorFW was “just her mom’s nightmare for her family,” for obvious reasons like no one in school carried a pencil case and no one had carried a pencil case since the 1950s. But this story caught fire. Katie’s friends were sure there was more to this than a comic strip. They would hijack Katie in the hall, open her backpack onto the floor yelling, “Pencil case. Pencil case” and look for a pencil case with the heart and the TM written on it. It was one of the rare times when my work led to a regular assault and battery on one of my children; but it was not the last.
I hated shopping for school supplies, so I stocked up whenever there were sales on the typical supplies called for. My kids could “go shopping” for what they needed in my home office that way. :D

The new pencil case was the height of my school year. It was all downhill from there.

I never had a pencil box, just a pocket protector and several pens & pencils. Oh, wait, that was in college.
