It’s interesting to go back and read Heinlein’s old story, “The Man Who Sold the Moon”, published in 1950, which imagines that the space program would be all done by the private sector. It didn’t happen that way.
Watching the Moon Landing as a kid, I wanted to be an astronaut in the worst way. Then they cancelled the Apollo program, and that dream died. Thanks for the memories, Lisa! (Great cartoon!)
And yet you decided to instead forsake the progressive nature of science and embrace the regressive nature of christian-conservative ideology! Why, Lisa; Why?
19 July, 1969 I was home on leave from the Army (I enlisted for 2 years in Nov 1968). Ten days later I was in Vietnam and about 2 to 3 weeks later Woodstock happened.
Where are all those wonderful new things that Popular Mechanics and Popular Science and Analog and even the Saturday Evening Post were promising us in those days? I want my flying car… Though I do have a (much) better “wrist radio” now, and robot house cleaners (sort of) and universal translation (kinda nearly) and a personalized sound track for the story of my life…
