I teach on modern political ideologies, including fascism, and while it’s true Trump checks off some of the boxes for fascism, so did Obama, and most of the Democratic candidates have made statements and/or promoted policies that most fascists of the 1920’s or 30’s would agree with. That’s not terribly surprising, given that American progressives at the time had a favorable opinion of fascism; Mussolini was an admired figure in their circles until the invasion of Abyssinia.
For those who are interested, here’s a writeup called “The 14 Defining Characteristics of Fascism.” You’ll expend no small amount of energy finding boxes that the president hasn’t checked off.
