A month? I guess this strip takes place either in the South or the West. I always thought it took place in the Northeast. School’s been barely out for about a week here in New York State.
When I was growing up we got out at the end of May or the first few days of June and went back the day after Labor Day. Talking with people from all over the country it appears that was the “norm.” In our area school gets out about the second week of June and starts up about the second week of August. Colleges and universities have odd schedules, too.

Here in Nova Scotia, our kids started summer vacation on June 28th and don’t go back until 2 days after Labor Day.
