Do you have to have a friend to be unfriended?

The only time I would ever touch Facebook is if I can get in on the ground floor when they do their initial public offering.

Only people that don’t know about privacy settings should be paranoid. As for social interaction, I usually only see posts from a handfull of friends.

I do love all the people here snobbing facebook and feeling good about themselves.

Facebook isn’t an evil thing (although when used incorrectly, it can be annoying to see).

In college now, it’s a great way to stay in touch with friends from high school that now go to different colleges, that I don’t get to see much anymore (one went to Cali, which is more or less on the other side of the country from me).

A friend is just a stranger you haven’t made yet. Or was it a stranger is just a friend you haven’t made yet? Now I remember, it was the last one. Anyway, be FRIENDLY, life is short. :)

@Richard - yes but he also said that outside of a dog, a book is man’s best friend – inside a dog, it’s too dark to read.

Just as a counterpoint to all the neighborhood grouches around here complaining about what the kids do these days (along with tearing up their lawn, of course), I’ll say this about Facebook:

I find it to be a useful service for staying up to date with my friends and family. I don’t find it excessively intrusive. And I appreciate the free service that they provide me.

(and no, I’m not a kid anymore).

Actually, Nair, Facebook has become a major old folks haunt as well a corporate shilling station.

I’m on FB and have finally figured out how to remove all the family history albums I’d originally set up for my family to see. Once I remove them, I’ll have to think about whether I want to bother with (and BE bothered by) FB anymore. Way too many people I didn’t want to find me (before I knew about privacy settings) found and annoyed me with requests to be friends. While I agree with 1OldDude about being friendly, I don’t need a lot of “friends.”

I agree about watching the FB settings but once you master that, I find it a great way to stay in touch with people half the world away.

Wiley, still loving your daily desk calendar. Today is “Media’s Age of Irony,” absolutely fabulous. Thanks.

Actually, FB has been a really great way for me to keep tabs with family, especially cousins, who are spread out throughout the US. As long as you know to set your privacy settings the way you want, you should be ok. And I NEVER friend someone I don’t know.

plus4: I can’t say I’ve ever seen the bearded guy in the robe with the “repent” sign. But I have seen a fair number of neatly-dressed, short-haired, clean-shaven people toting around such signs. Few years back, I was at a biker rally in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and amidst the usual Sturgis-like frivolity there were some very earnest young people holding up signs with such encouraging messages as “THE PARTY ENDS IN H E L L !” and “TO MARRY A DIVORCED WOMAN IS ADULTERY!” and so forth. (Hmm… biker rally plus college town plus Bible Belt equals…?)

@puddleglum1066: I once had a Bible Belt but my pants kept falling down…

Luckily I posted all the details on FB so my 1349 friends could be kept up to date!

(Now to go and take my tongue out of my cheek).

Varnes and Nightgaunt- I also only meet up with real local friends and a few family on FB (avoid others) and local ones keep up with current projects-very handy!

There are lots of Christian Biker rallies you can hang out at Puddle. that way you don’t have to worry about the signs or drunken idiots with pool cues hitting you upside the head.

I was actually just “unfriended” by a cousin just a couple of weeks ago. I couldn’t believe it! Just because I got offended when she said that I was an idiot with no parenting skills.

I really wish they’d change the word “friend” to “contact” on FB. Then so many people might not get so worked up about it.

I got unfriended unceremoniously and suddenly by a “friend” in the middle of a serious, but not heated, discussion that he wanted to have.
