It has been observed by various people that depriving the imprisoned of the vote encourages politicians to imprison their political enemies. Certainly #45 is enthusiastic about jailing journalists who happen to record him accurately.
Furthermore, considering the massive number of people of color in jail now for minor levels of marijuana dealing, you have to wonder whose idea this is, and who it benefits. Once again…
Only felons are subject to disenfranchisement, actually, and when they’ve served their time, they should get the vote back. Those not convicted of felonies should get a ballot. But, under the current system, we won’t have to worry about anyone working for Bonespurs voting in the near future.
There’s too many factors involved….to me, this a vote of convenience and advancement but on the other hand it could work against…depending WHOS IN OFFICE……
I am quite surprised that ANY candidate would promote the idea that we have rights which the government should not have the power to take away, under any circumstances. Kudos to Sanders.
Just imagine if incarceration didn’t rob you of all your rights? why do you think certain types of people are arrested more often? Soon after the Civil War I and Reconstruction was rescinded the police were tasked with enforcing something new then called “nuisance laws” which means he preyed upon the former slaves enslaving via prison and cutting their right to vote. I find it antithetical to the ethos of our country to suppress the voting rights of those who have been arrested, imprisoned, and then released deprived of their rights forever.
As Clay mentions on Claytoonz.com for this cartoon, Trump wants the census question about citizenship to discourage minorities from voting. ICE has been going over legal residents forms looking for tiny mistakes to deport people that have been legal residents for decades.
If non-citizens cannot be counted in the census, the prisoners should not be counted either. Most prisons are in rural areas which increases the representation for the rural area since the prisoners are counted in the prison instead of where they are from. If the “logic” behind not counting non-citizens is because they can’t vote, then the rural areas where prisons are should not get their numbers inflated. IMO, both should be counted.
As Clay said “They (Repubs) believe acres should have more representation than Democrats.”

If criminals couldn’t vote, that would automatically keep trump and any members of his family from voting!

Great strip, Clay, but why would he start now?

Trump thought horizontal stripes would at least make him look thinner. Wrong again.

They can’t vote. But they can run for office.
