A newspaper chain for which I long ago drew editorial cartoons hosted an annual conference for its editorial-page writers and editors, and that included me, in spite of widely varying levels of grudge and acceptance among those editors. To be honest, some of the ones closer to the grudge end of the spectrum, or even beyond that end of the spectrum, kind of hurt my feelings. I figured they had the same perfectly fair question I had — the one about exactly why an ability to draw and write lifted me anywhere near their level — but I preferred using it as motivation to do the job well instead of as a reason to dismiss my contribution outright.
One of the features of those conferences, I suppose the main feature, was to invite movers and shakers to enlighten us, or make their case, or stand there like St. Sebastian and take a Fred Bear quiverload of abuse. So I watched the show as one of my more grudging editors demonstrated it wasn’t just me and rained arrows into some poor lobbyist who was pushing for, I believe, the right of any citizen to pack a concealed firearm. It wasn’t pretty. Now, I am no fan of the notion that more firearms, especially indiscriminately distributed, makes me or anyone else safer. This was an opinion I shared with the editor. But he was getting worked up and frankly embarrassing himself, and at one point the gun guy gently said, “well, you can’t really say that, because …” and the editor sharply cut him off and pounded on the table and roared, “I can say whatever I want because it’s an OPINION!” Which, even if it had been true — he had, as it happens, been stating things as fact that were plain incorrect — I couldn’t see anyone at that point taking his opinion seriously. I really couldn’t, and I actually shared his opinions on the subject, at least the opinions that were actual opinions and not errors posing as fact.

Coach has his opinion and Caulfield has his,
which reveals something about Caulfield.

I would guess it was a sports reference, coming from the Coach. I’m lovin’ seeing Caulfield so tickled!

Actually it reveals nothing about Frazz, even though his ‘opinion’ is accurate.

and then there are times when people form opinions that seem to come out of left field…The comments that follow some opinions seem so non-sequitur.
Oh and I looked up Scherzo. yeah, that might be a good description

You don’t have the right to your opinion. You have the right to what you can defend.

From the movie Reds:
Redneck: What are you doing here?
Warren Beatty: I write.
Redneck: [brief pause for cogitation] No. You wrong. [punch]

Frazz’s opinion of his own opinion is “fine”. Coach Hacker’s opinion of his opinion isn’t quite so solid.

You have a right to your own opinions, but not your own facts.

I normally like Frazz, but he’s self-righteous at times.
