Quite honestly, there should be NO mention of race AT ALL on University applications, or pre-admission testing. It should be done STRICTLY based on testing scores, BUT, of course THAT would make WAY TOO MUCH SENSE, so it will never happen! Also, universities couldn’t get those promising football players that can run, pass and block like someone in the NFL, but can’t read past about a 5th grade level.

    Well pointed out.

I’d file it with the plutocrat and the two plebes at a table where the plutocrat has all but two coins of the money, and he’s whispering to the white plebe that the black one is after his coin.

Typical liberal stupidity. We see a handful of slots going to kids through illegal means and the left explodes in fury. But for decades the schools have been dumbing down through sports waivers, legacy waivers, and yes, affirmative action quotas. Please spare me the semantics. It is still affirmative action, no matter how you dress it up.

Schools should base admission solely on scholastic merit. When you divide the pool of students into separate quota categories you essentially guarantee that the school will end up with less than the best of the best of the best. You guarantee that some of those slots will go to kids with lower stats and some kids who are better qualified will be excluded.

Before you object consider the impact of similar policies on professional sports. What would happen if we imposed racial quota’s on the NBA? NFL? MLB? Or…gasp…the NHL. The idea is absurd. No team would willingly accept such limits. How many Hispanic NBA stars have we seen this century, or last? Black hockey players?

I suppose a private school that accepts no federal funding should be allowed to do whatever it wants to do, but any publicly funded school should be prohibited from lowering academic standards for ANY class of applicant. Eliminate legacies. Eliminate race based variances. And yes, require athletes to meet the same academic standards all the other kids must attain.

Absolutely. But first we make sure minority communities have sub standard schools, and that will make sure that no minority students ever get to “our” universities. A fine idea.

    Easily fixed,

Have a nationwide public school system funded at a high standard for every student. No private schools or universities. Provision of all educational and tech aids through the school system.Living expenses of all tertiary students covered through the school system.Progress solely on merit.

    Never going to happen?

Funnily enough pretty much the system the military uses to train its troops.

At the time that we made high school free the idea was that it was cheaper to make people job ready than to deal with a bunch of people who couldn’t do much of anything, and high school was considered a good education. That is now the situation with a college education. The average college graduate pays about $5800 more a year in federal taxes than the average high school graduate. Over 30 years, that totals about $172,000. If that’s divided by the 4 years it takes to get a college education, the government would break even if it paid every student $42,000 a year to attend school.

This doesn’t even consider that with the degree, the person is less likely to ever need unemployment or welfare, that more students would complete high school if they could see a clear way to a really good job, and that they would be enriching the Social Security and Medicare funds. They would also be paying a larger amount in all other types of taxes. And, the person who takes the job the person who goes to college would have been doing without the education is contributing to society instead of being unemployed. The best investment we could make to keep America strong is to not just forgive all student loans but to make all higher education, including trade schools, etc totally free, as long as the student is making decent grades, and increase the number of schools and teachers to make room for all who can profit from the education. We don’t, even at a time of high unemployment, have so much a lack of jobs as we have a lack of people who have the skills to perform the jobs that are available- in other words, a lack of education.
