There is a tradition called taarof among my Iranian friends. It seems to work similarly. People are supposed to offer you things repeatedly. If they don’t really mean the offer, they will only offer once or twice. You aren’t expected to say yes unless it is at least the third offer – it is offensive if you agree right away.
