I have been on a ship that was circling a hurricane and it was not that choppy. Mind you, I did see several people fall down, but I don’t think we ever got even 10 degrees off of normal.
I was on a cruise that took a big dip in the middle of the night – we slid out of bed. In the morning, they were cleaning up all the broken liquor bottles, etc.

No wave could do that to a modern ship. Swells, yes, but not waves. (Unless, of course, the computerized stabilizers go out.)
