Blackface is disgusting and offense. There is no excuse, whether in 1984 (Gov Ralph Northam; 20 years after civil rights was enacted into law) or 1980 (Attorney General Mark Herren). No excuse.
But if 57% of African Americans in Virginia support Northam staying in office as indicated in recent polls, who am I as an old white guy in California to try to tell them what is right for their community?
They are the ones who know the issue, know the governor’s long record since, and are in a better position to judge. I defer.
“Animosity in the town [Richmond, Virginia] is abating, the inhabitants now accept accomplished facts, the downfall of the Confederacy and the abolition of slavery. There still remains much for us to do, but every day brings new reason for confidence in the future.” • Abraham Lincoln
Perhaps.. past indiscretions make one a better person. Life experiences can.. to those wise enough to learn.. change a person to be an advocate for good. The trump being an obvious exception.
This should not be a hard decision, yet it will be. We are dealing with people..who were raised under all sorts of circumstances. I would dare any one of us…ANY one…to honestly look into your own past and not find something you are not proud of.
I am not a bible thumper, but I can’t help but think of that one phrase.. said in the bible (I had to look it up to be correct) “Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” It is no excuse, but it does seem apropos here.
We learn and form our own habits and thoughts from way back..not always for the best, but it is up to us as individuals to judge ourselves and learn from mistakes. Some of us do a better job than others. Just saying…
I am glad I do not have to be in on making the decisions here as to what to do. Nothing done here was nice, good, proper or right, but neither do we know what went on in the individual minds of those being judged.
I’m sure it will be a given that the “other side” is jumping up and down with glee at all this. Shame on them!! But I remember feeling the same way the last time I heard that one of ‘them’ got in hot water. So…shame on me also!
It’s easier to break up a simple fist fight than to make correct moral decisions and judgements. I am making none here!! It’s going to be “hang ’em high” or "turn ‘em loose’. So don’t anyone try to guess what “side” I am on!!

Maybe this is Virginia’s idea of an early April fools joke? Where’s the gotcha?
