In the great renaissance of the Robber Barons, the GOP (and too many Dems) will not allow impediments to either jobs or capital leaving the country. Not as long as they continue to personally profit from it.
First, business moved the union jobs from the northern states to the southern states where wages were lower, labor wasn’t organized, and regulations weaker and then business move them out of the country to where wages were even lower and regulations even fewer.
I had a friend, several years ago who worked for a local food processor when the I.N.S. raided their plant and removed many of their workers because they were “in this country, illegally”! Upper management advised “human resources” to make sure only “legal Americans” were hired. Over the next several weeks production plummeted!
When the lower managers were queried, they stated they were doing the best they could with their reduced workforce! When the “new” head of H.R. was called on the carpet, they were told that no one was willing to work for the wages they paid.
He was fired and the old head of H.R. was rehired and quietly told to rehire the old “illegal” workers, where possible – most had managed to sneak back over the border by then so things progressed as before.
The only “casualties” were the new head of H.R. and my friend who refused to fake I.D.s for the returning employees.
And life goes on…
(and, just so you know, both my friend’s sympathies AND mine were totally FOR the “rehired workers”!)
Proctor and Gamble bought Gillette, they’re moving production to Mexico and Poland. The land in South Boston is worth a fortune. P&G is selling off lots as fast as they can. Couple of years and Gillette will be gone, without a trace left. I bought some gillette blades, made in Russia. Wow! Tossed them in trash. What can anyone do? I used to look for a union label and then later a USA tag. Now? It makes an old silver-back sad.
We used to have a lot of great walls called regulations which prevented corporations from shipping jobs overseas, dodging taxes or polluting the environment. Good thing we switched our priorities to focus on what’s good for corporations instead of what’s good for citizens.
The adamant fence… so, you think it would be the best not to trade with foreign countries anymore. No buying, no selling, America to the Americans! I only doubt whether this would make America great.
The so-called jobs and tax act cut the tax on corporate profit down to 21%; but if the corporation moves its operation across the border they are eligible for an additional 10% tax savings! It was a law written by rich men for rich men and their families. It cut deductions for middle class Americans and added deductions for golf course owners, private jet owners, and property developers, in addition to cutting the inheritance tax on wealthy families.
