When my Dad applied for his DL in the mid 1900’s, the officer asked him if he knew how to drive…..he replied he thought so….and got his license on the spot.When he had it renewed for the last time….in his 80’s, he told the officer that, at his age, he didn’t need it for that long….the officer (they were friends) told him to bring back the unused portion and he’d get a refund!!!

Back then they would have. Just watch old TV shows from the 50s. Whenever they encounter people in stores they always use that saying.
