I wasn’t standing in the water, but… Since a child, I’ve had a tendency to over heat, so I dress in layers to adjust for the temperature. At a Boy Scout winter camp out in Wisconsin it was a bright clear day and about 4 below (-20C) . We played in the snow all morning, and the scout masters made us a big hot lunch that we ate on picnic tables outside. Somehow, the bigger boys in my patrol decided it was my turn to do the dishes. That wasn’t a problem. I worried about the water freezing, but with hot water from the big pot on the fire, that was not a problem. What I did not expect was — my temperature started going up. So I pulled off my outer coat. Then my inner coat. Then my warm shirt. Then my soft shirt. On that cold winter day, I still had two pairs of jean and my boots on, but everything else was off.

In my part of the country, winter clamming is a lot more comfortable. You’re on the beach at low tide, bundled in flannels and heavy coats
