I actually had this fear back in the late 70s-early 80s when digital watches became affordable. Fearful, because it was going to be tough teaching physics if clockwise and counterclockwise (or anti-clockwise) didn’t make sense to students.
I once wore a disney Goofy watch that had hands that turned counter clockwise. It took a couple of weeks to get used to reading the clock backwards. I was surprised when a 4 year old in my lap looked at it and recognized that the hands ran backwards. Most kids her age didn’t even realize what a wrist watch was.
Interestingly the last time I saw the Doomsday clock, a week of so ago, it’s still analog. Seeing 11:58 just isn’t the same as seeing the hands almost closed.
One of my daughters skipped second grade where they taught how to read analog clocks. It was quite a while before figured out she couldn’t read the time without her digital watch

Not necessarily! Smart phones do have the option of clock faces though there’s always a digital backup.

Now imagine a clock with Roman numerals.

I thought ‘clockwise’ was just an intelligent clock.
