You should not think so literal about everything.

He obviously has no idea where the quote came from or what the original speaker was talking about.

The original speaker was Jesus Christ. Matthew 5:41. The context was that a Roman soldier could force a civilian to carry the soldier’s gear for a mile. This wasn’t voluntary. Suggesting that the civilian might CHOOSE to carry the gear for a second mile was outrageous, which is what Jesus was trying to achieve. He was trying to get people to break out of their self centred focus and treat those around them with generosity and compassion. Unfortunately the saying has been greatly twisted over the years, and now has little of the original shock value.

That phrase and golf don’t go together well.

Actually, thinking about something other than the putt should have worked. But then you couldn’t have Ralph’s punch line.

Hey, I looked up Drabble in Wikipedia (for another reason) and ran across this:

He was also temporarily married to Wendy in Las Vegas, but that marriage was annulled because they were married by someone who was not an Elvis impersonator.

WHAT?! When did Norman and Wendy get married? I’ve been reading this for a few years now and I don’t remember this. Is it just my failing memory?
