I know at least two women who never wanted cell phones, but finally got them because you can’t find a pay phone any more, and they didn’t feel safe.

It’s hard for poor people… they can’t just make an occasional call when necessary.

Even if they buy or are given cheap prepaid cell phones, they have to keep buying more minutes than they need just to keep them in service.

As for Elliot, he’d have more luck begging strangers to call his Mom or Dad on their cell phones than looking for a place to use coins.

Some modern pay phones supposedly also accept debit, credit, and gift cards…. but it does no good if there are none in town.

When I was in peril, I just held a snowball up to my bloody nose. Couple minutes, and your back in the game – with a bloody snowball!

While the history may be improving, the math isn’t. He missed his shot at improving his allowance. “If I have to use a pay phone, I’ll need a subsidy” even if there are no pay phones.

Yup… however did we survive without cell phones? Some of us grew up with things like lead paint, asbestos, metal fan blades (with practically no guard at all), and other such hazards. We left home during the day and didn’t return until dark and no cell phones to call for help and somehow, most of us survived it all.

But then, when I was growing up, a pay phone typically cost a dime and even a nickle when I was real young. You didn’t need a credit card to make a local phone call back then. Of course, toll calls and long distance calls were another matter, but most of us carried change in our pockets for just such need.
