An answering machine is what I use to screen calls on my landline. And when the local cell towers fail (or become swamped by calls) during an emergency I should still be able to receive and make calls just fine.
This reminds me of when answering machines first came out, with their miniature cassette tapes, and I produced some elaborate answering messages, with background music and all.
