I could not find the source of the story but I doubt that anything called “dollars” was involved. Examples:
“Beethoven settled for 100 florins for his First Symphony” https://scroll.in/magazine/981180/on-his-250th-birth-anniversary-remembering-beethoven-the-astute-businessman
“Prince Nikolai Galitzin commissioned the first three quartets (12, 13 and 15) and offered to pay Beethoven “what you think proper” for them. Beethoven replied on 25 January 1823 with his price of 50 ducats for each opus." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Late_string_quartets_(Beethoven)
“the mass was sold in 1824 for 1,000 florins Convention coins to the Schott publishing house in Mainz together with the Ninth Symphony that alone brought 600 florins.” https://scroll.in/magazine/981180/on-his-250th-birth-anniversary-remembering-beethoven-the-astute-businessman

Out of curiosity, what the mark the German currency at the time of Beethoven or was it something else? For sure it certainly wasn’t dollars and cents.
