The general rule of attrition seems to be working in thinning-out the political herd of conservatives. Republicans are not only forced to commit illegal and unconstitutional means to maintain their weakening grasp of office (voter suppression, gerrymandering), but they are losing the battle in getting the younger white nationalist males their ideology requires. This vicious cycle Jen Sorensen depicts is quickly starting to crumble. The Geritol generation still clinging to power in the Legislature are dying off, and the new generation is smart enough to realize their future depends on fresh, new ideas.

Climate change is driving a lot of this: If your agriculture / fishing / tourist / … industry is suffering, then employment drops. When employment drops, “alternative income activities” arise, which, being mostly illegal, gives rise to criminal gangs → crime organizations → violence (against individuals and government) → refugees… who are seeking both less violence and better work opportunities.
