Just a note that I don’t really come down on either side. If you want to honor the man, do it. If you find honoring this man repulsive, say that. But I do agree that none of these men were saints. The troubling part is when we sanitize their legacies to make saints out of them. They’re all human and when we worship them, we stop learning from them.

I was going to say that JFK could have chimed in but then I thought of ALL the others that have clay feet and also could reply…you’re so right Mr. Carroll.

We would all find politics easier, well, less painful, if we looked to elect people instead of heroes.

The portrayal of Lincoln in this comic has made me reflect on how much book make these people heroes. I always read that Lincoln got along great with his sister, why would they tell us that if they didn’t want to make a saint out of him?

There is a distinction between respect & whitewashing. Bush was a decent man who spent his life in government. Like him or loathe his decisions, he put himself out there. From his opposition to civil rights to his signing of the Disabilities Act, he was around long enough to evolve his views. He maintained American prestige & showed the benefits of diplomacy. The Jon Meachum biography really illuminated his character & personality. History should be kinder to him than his contemporaries.

Being a leader in a republic also means being a politician. Sometimes ruthless, almost always compromised by the special interests that helped elect him or her.

I am one of the few who still believe that the first Gulf War was a mistake. Much that has happened in the Middle East follows from that war.

Nevertheless, history will judge 41 – for good and bad.

But I would gladly exchange George H.W. Bush for the current occupant of the Presidency.

I think Washington deserves his halo (within reason). He is the only President would could have been a King and he was our greatest general not based on his victories, he lost more battles than he won, but his leadership (he did have lot of help) ultimately won the war. If he lost, history would be completely different. Lincoln is a complicated historical figure and I will leave it at that.
