This is a special storyline. If I remember correctly, this is the point when Lynn Johnston stopped drawing Michael’s hair in an homage to Linus van Pelt from Peanuts and started drawing him with the hair style he would keep for the rest of the comic strip (not counting the hairy university years). Yes people, you can kiss those “Michael has a bald spot” jokes good-bye!
Oh I remember those days being the youngest of three. Having two older brothers who love to primp in front of the mirror. It seemed like it took forever for them to get their hair just right. My middle brother would just stand there talking to himself like it was someone else. I guess to see how he looked when he was socializing. That was way way way way before Facebook and cellphones. Standing at the bathroom door waiting for my turn was sometimes fun. But I would use my parents bathroom if I couldn’t wait.
The first two homes our family lived in when I was growing up in Pittsburgh only had one bathroom for a whole family. I think it was after World War II that houses for us ‘average folks’ started to be built with more than one…

Go to your parents’ bathroom if they are not using it. If they are downstairs, sneak in there and use it.

And here I thought females took forever to get ready.

With four teenage girls at the same time, all grooming and makeup was banished to the half-bath. I worn a crewcut back then, so not my problem.

Considering Michael’s weird head shape, Elizabeth’s question in the fourth panel may be spot on.

I lived in a house with 10 people and two bathrooms. Primping was done in the bedroom only. You were not allowed to lock for bathing, either.

I don’t think one should ever ask a boy why he’s taking so long in the bathroom.
