I disagree, Marty. In my experience, it wasn’t a racist slur until he used it as one, and I hope it will once again lose that connotation.
I was taught that (the “original”) Pocahontas was someone to be admired, even a sort of heroine. Trump’s use of her name to symbolically demean all Native Americans has not in any way reduced my respect for either Pocahontas or the members of the First Nations, past or present.
(FWIW, my own DNA is entirely European, but there is a family story I think might be worth telling here some day.)
