I saw what Harvey did last year (many friends lost homes), and Florence is looking eerily similar in that it’s slow-moving, and there’s a chance that conditions will keep it churning over the Carolinas’ coastline for a while, dumping more and more rain. I hope everyone heeds the evacuation alerts in time…..
Question. Are we counting deaths the same way in PR as we have in prior weather events? It appears that the new official count includes follow on fatalities that occurred weeks and even months after the event.
Comment. It is hardly fair to make fun of the fact that relief efforts were impeded by the fact that PR is an island. It is a simple fact of geography that defies the political party of the occupant of the WH.
The impact and post event conditions in PR were and are very much a product of decades of government corruption on the island. This is not news and its not rocket science. The crappy infrastructure has been a well known ongoing problem for 40 plus years, probably longer.
An island. Surrounded by water. The same kind of water the U.S. NAVY operates in and would have been MORE then willing to assist in the recovery…if they had been asked by the Administration! And yes, they were asked…AFTER growing criticism.
Posted 11/29/2017: But the naval effort will continue to grow anyway. In addition to the Wasp joining the mission, the USNS Comfort, a hospital ship, is expected to deploy Friday from Norfolk, and arrive off the coast of Puerto Rico early next week. The ship began preparing to deploy last week, but U.S. officials decided last weekend against sending it, said Thomas LaCrosse, the Pentagon’s director of defense support to civil authorities.
However, on Tuesday, Federal Emergency Management Agency Director William “Brock” Long announced at the White House that the Comfort would be deploying after all. That decision came amid growing criticism that it should already have been at sea heading toward the island.
Don’t know of any conservatives who died fighting the British in the Revolutionary War. About 50,000 Tories abandoned the colonies to follow right-wing icon Gen. Benedict Arnold to the other side. Forty thousand of them to the territory that is now Canada and the other 10,000 to England. Other than that, conservatives put up a pretty good fight; if you listen to them.
Hurricanes are becoming a more serious threat because of the increase in population along the coastline. The more development, the costlier the outcome. Hurricanes, whether they’ve gotten stronger or not, are hitting areas that, 50, 60 years ago, would have been sparsely populated.
