Aah, Sarah the knowing mom. She has been waiting for this moment to arrive, as she knew it must. Learn to listen to words of wisdom, boy. It’s another sign of the dreaded maturity.

First relationships never last, but no kid in one will ever believe it

Not all first relationships fall apart. Many a couple met when they were in high school and got married afterwards and stayed married for over 50 years. It’s just in the past 30 or so years, that we can’t seem to handle the phrase “long term”, so “until death do us part” has become “first relationships never last” and “if I’m not happy, we’ll just get a divorce”.

Boy I am glad I never had to deal with this, didn’t have boyfriends from my HS, had “guy friends” outside of HS as I was in a band and had more guy friends that girl friends. Had 2 girlfriends in HS and others were acquaintances, in last year two more good girlfriends. I wasn’t even planning on going to prom. However one girl I knew said “you have to go” and she set me up with a guy she had dated and I went with him

I imagine that people in first relationships that endure are people whose positions on the maturity spectrum remain approximately congruous to each other.
