R-E-S-P-E-C-T the Natural Woman who rose from gospel singer in the church where her father was one of the most renowned African American preachers, to one of the most popular, beloved and talented performers in American history. First woman in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. First African American woman to sing at a presidential inauguration. When five-year-old Aretha moved into the Detroit (motor city; Motown) neighborhood of eight-year-old Smokey Robinson, who became a life long family friend, he reports he was immediately impressed with her enormous talent.
Tonight, Aretha, we ALL “say a little prayer for you.”
When one of her songs came on the radio, you knew immediately who it was, and this dates back to when AM radio was the primary format. She had her own kind of style that made her stand out from others that she distinctively owned. But not only could she sing she was so much more than that in so many other areas that many people never knew.
