Nah – they would’ve print that because it wouldn’t stir up enough division in the country. 47 murders will occur daily and they will put one on the front page that might be racially motivated. (Which, like all murders, is terrible).
It’s from 1999 so I think the gag is about how complicated it could be to find the continuation of front page/section stories deep inside the many pages of each section (often there were 4 to 5) of a daily paper. Now that many newspapers have maybe two thin sections maybe it’s not as relevant. I stopped getting newspapers when they shrank the funnies so much it wasn’t even funny. ;-)

I don’t remember newspapers doing that so much. Magazines, sure, they were very irritating in that way.
