I’m not so sure I would want to pet a strangers dog without the master being there to acknowledge its okay? While many dogs are cute and friendly and enjoy a pat or two, you just never know, but a friendly “Hello” to pooches is just fine!
We saw that our neighbor’s dog had gotten out and was walking up the street. Just as my wife was going out to get her a car pulled up and the guy tried to kidnap the dog. My wife yelled until he left.
My dog is a very large (18 lb) people friendly Pomeranian. He would not last 5 minutes left outside like that. We padlocked the gates on his outdoor kennel so non one can come in and steal him.
We used to have a very, very friendly boxer-pit cross. She looked as if she’d chew you to rags, but she was such a sweet thing. She came down with something very similar to sickle cell, and died when she was only five.
As a retail worker, I often see customers with service dogs. One customer has a very friendly Goldendoodle, who he let’s me say hi to. One day, he came in with her, after she had just been groomed. She had these cute ribbons on both ears and as I was petting her, I said, “I like your ribbons…” I swear, her face lit up and her tail wagged furiously! She then jumped up and licked my face! The owner was surprised and apologized, putting her back in service dog mode. But I only laughed and said I didn’t mind, then added, “Everyone’s day should start with a little dog slobber!”
I have never understood why people take their dog/pets here there and everywhere. I grew up with cats and dogs in my youth. We didn’t make them accompany us when we went somewhere. My father used to say out loud at summertime band concerts: You see that dog? He loves music. And then there were the dogs left in cars by the dog lovers who let their beloved pets cook to death.
I don’t see why everyone’s so worried about dogs being left unattended. It’s not like there are human-sized coyotes pretending to be humans walking about where they can get them. I think they’ll be fine left alone out on the street.

I’d be somewhat paranoid about leaving my dog tied up outside a store. Too many stories of dog thieves.
