I care enough to follow the headlines. When it’s eventually made into a movie, I’ll see it.

(That being said, I was legitimately thrilled when it was announced that they were alive, and heartbroken that a diver was killed in a rescue attempt.)

The cognitive dissonance of giving the foolhardy so much attention while ignoring the plight of desperate families fleeing for their lives — trying to find a safe refuge for their family — and encountering xenophobic nationalism in a country that had long enjoyed the reputation of being a safe place to bring a family. I’m glad that my parents/grandparents are not alive to see the people who have seized leadership of their Republican party and turned its values upside down.

I have been following both stories. The rescue of the Thai boys is a great human interest story as well as a study on how to use ingenuity to rescue individuals. This does not impact my overall concern about the unfairness of the treatment of the families who are fleeing for their lives and being treated horribly by our current administration. I, too, feel dismayed at how the Republican party has changed.

We feel more involved in a rescue operation on the other side of the world than what happens to the street boys in our own environment. I think that is because, if it happens on the other side, we can let our emotions run free. We will never feel guilty of anything we couldn’t do about it. But if it happens in your neighbourhood and you get emotionally involved, then you have to act as well. If you don’t do that and you have a conscience, you’ll be wondering all your life what you could have done.

Refugees are not illegals under US and international law – only under GOP hate law. Make America legal again.
