jlocke, since I was born here, I can take no credit for being a US citizen. It was nothing I did, so how should I be proud to be American? You might better ask this question of those who chose to come here and become citizens. Most of those whom I know came and took out citizenship because of what they thought the ideals of the country were. They took pride in their choice. One friend said once to me that coming into the US gave him a feeling of freedom to be himself. Now, though, with the changes we are seeing, he is feeling that the country has changed and not for the better. When I hear these friends saying that events here remind them of the USSR or 1930’s Germany (and yes, I have heard both those comparisons made) and that they are worried about where we are going here, then I pay attention. They have experiences I have not had in oppressive times and places. If we come through this time with stronger principles and a unified nation with freedom for all, then I will feel proud of us for meeting and conquering the challenges.
