My lab would act like he would have to go outside (usually at 2am) and then FAKE PEE!! We finally caught on when we used a flashlight and saw him just crouch and nothing came out (we were laughing so hard that he actually did this!) and then he would bark at whatever was bugging him. He is a total nut.
Finally we figured out when he had to really go, and when he just wanted to go outside and bark. Now that he is a senior, he just wants to sleep. (He is still a goofball, though)

He left his toy ON the cushion because Phil is his toy.
