On the specific area of preventing Iran from developing nukes, the JCPOA was successful. No, we didn’t get commitment from Iran to not do things they feel are in their interests. We also didn’t give them security guarantees or promises of massive American investment. Nor, did Obama lavish praise on Ayatollah Khamenei.
So far, Trump has opened dialogue (which is good) & signed a vague statement on denuclearization. The North Koreans have at times put their denuclearization in the context of global denuclearization. It will be a while before we know what they agree to, but something like the JCPOA is probably the best case scenario.
When Kim allows IAEA inspectors in, I’ll start entertaining comparisons to the JCPOA.
